About the course

The Department of Mechanical Engineering is one of six engineering departments in the Hajim School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. The other five are biomedical engineering, chemical engineering, computer science, electrical and computer engineering, and optics. The MS degree in mechanical engineering requires 30 hours of graduate credit. Students are also required to complete a thesis (Plan A) or an oral exam (Plan B). No more than 10 credits can be transferred from non-matriculated study at Rochester or from an outside institution. See the Graduate Bulletin for steps on how to request transfer credit. Applicants must have earned a U.S. baccalaureate degree or its equivalent from a college, university, or technical school of acceptable standing. Students in their final year of undergraduate study may be admitted on the condition that their bachelor's degrees are awarded before they matriculate. Evidence of the earned degree is required prior to matriculation in the form of an official transcript noting degree conferral.
