About the course

The family sciences master’s (M.S.) program uses an integrative approach to learning about improving individual, family, and community well-being. The program prepares students for immediate employment in their chosen area, and also provides an excellent foundation for subsequent matriculation into a doctoral program.

Five emphasis areas are available in the family sciences master’s program: (a) adolescent development, (b) aging, (c) couple and family therapy, (d) family finance and economics, and (e) family processes. The curriculum for each emphasis area except couple and family therapy requires a minimum of 30 credit hours, comprised of 15 credit hours of core courses, 5 hours of electives, 3 hours of a data analysis or program evaluation course, 1 hour of a professional development seminar, and 6 credit hours for the thesis (Plan A) or scholarly project (Plan B). How to apply

Entry requirements for University of Kentucky

Students must have a bachelor’s degree prior to admission into the master’s program, and particularly outstanding applicants who have earned a bachelor’s degree but not a master’s degree may be considered for admission into the doctoral program, upon request. Successful applicants to the master’s program in recent years have generally had a minimum 3.4 undergraduate GPA, verbal and quantitative scores above the 50th percentile, and a 4.0 or higher on the analytical portion of the GRE. A variety of academic backgrounds can qualify you for admission into the family sciences master's or doctoral program. For example, a previous degree in any social science (e.g., family science, psychology, sociology, communications, gender studies) is viewed favorably in the admissions process. Those from more distant disciplines such as education or health sciences are also considered, but some additional preliminary coursework may be required. Relevant professional work experience is taken into consideration too. An overall grade point average of 2.75 on undergraduate work and 3.00 on all graduatework is required by the Graduate School. Individual departments may require higher gradepoint averages. Submission of scores on the verbal, quantitative and analytical writing portions of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) unless their chosen program indicates otherwise. The Graduate School has no minimum GRE score requirement, individual programs may set specific score requirements and in some cases may require the advanced portion of the GRE.
