About the course

The Theory and Composition area at California State University, Long Beach is a comprehensive and progressive program that prepares students for successful careers in concert, media (film, television, animation or video game), dance, theater and/or experimental music. The curriculum provides the necessary techniques, materials, practices and technological experiences for students to envision and pursue their own careers. Students demonstrate determination, curiosity, and a strong work ethic, while the area is guided by a faculty with diverse and extensive artistic and pedagogical experience. Private, one-on-one, studio instruction by our composition faculty and a recital project distinguishes our program. Students have the opportunity to receive additional feedback in composition class and the Composition Colloquium, the weekly idea emporium required to all composition major students. In addition, students have an array of courses to choose from: media scoring to songwriting, interactive media to sound design, from arranging to jazz theory, and from business of music to conducting. The university environment provides the ideal platform for collaborations with other programs: animation, dance, art, theater, design, engineering, science, and math. How to apply

Entry requirements for California State University - Long Beach

A Bachelor of Music degree, or a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Music or a bachelor's degree, from an accredited institution, with a minimum of 24 upper division units of music comparable to those required at this University,

  The student must request all institutions of higher learning attended to send official copies of transcripts directly to the Office of Admissions and Records and another set to the Conservatory of Music Graduate Advisor. Transcripts presented to the Admissions Office by the student are not acceptable. Graduates of California State University, Long Beach must follow these same procedures when making application to the Master of Music in music program,

  All applicants are required to complete the Bob Cole Conservatory Graduate Placement Examination before they register for courses applicable to the Master of Music degree. (Under special circumstances, a student may take the examination during the first semester in which he or she is registered in courses applicable to the degree),

  Criteria according to concentration:

  Composition: submission and approval of a portfolio of representative original scores and evidence of baccalaureate-level competency as required in the Bachelor of Music Composition Option,

  Conducting: successful completion of a conducting examination and approval by the conducting faculty,

  Performance/Jazz Studies: Performance-Opera, Jazz Studies, and Instrumental/Vocal: an audition both at a performance level and with a repertory on an instrument or in voice acceptable to the faculty of the specific performance medium.

  A GPA of 3.00 or better in upper division Music courses. Students who do not meet the 3.00 GPA requirement or specified balance within the required 24 units of upper division music but who possess outstanding or unusual qualifications that promise a significant contribution to the Master of Music program may petition for a special review from the Conservatory Graduate Advisory Committee. Meet the minimum GPA requirements for admission to the university Hold a baccalaureate degree with a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5., Please submit one set of official transcripts from each college or university you have attended. Be in good standing at the last college or university you attended. Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) Paper-based – 550, Internet-based (iBT) – 80, International English Language Testing System (IELTS) - 6.0 each sub-section, A performance audition is required for acceptance into the degree programs of the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music
