About the course

Students entering this focus area will have an interest in performing research towards the understanding, prevention, and treatment of infectious and immunologic diseases. Track-specific coursework will take an integrative, translational approach to all aspects of infectious disease. They will learn about and discuss contemporary and emerging pathogens (viral, bacterial, and other), the human immune response, the development and delivery of novel diagnostics and therapeutics, as well as the social, psychological, and economic consequences of infectious and immune diseases. Students will develop a professional level of expertise in immunity and infectious disease, and learn to apply this knowledge to carry out innovative and interdisciplinary research to advance disease prevention, diagnostics and treatment. How to apply

Entry requirements for Virginia Tech

A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, in a relevant discipline. Consideration will be given to exceptional students from a variety of backgrounds, if their undergraduate coursework and/or professional and research experiences provide the appropriate background for graduate-level study in the biomedical sciences. A minimum overall undergraduate GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) is required, though competitive applicants will have a GPA of 3.5 or greater. All undergraduate and graduate transcripts must be provided (with English translation). Competitive applicants will also have some history of scientific research and experience presenting their data (such as posters or publications).

　　GRE examination results. A score in the upper quartile on both the verbal and quantitative portion of the GRE is recommended. Scores should be send to the Virginia Tech Graduate School, institution code 5859. There is no department code.

　　Three letters of recommendation from individuals qualified to evaluate the applicant’s potential for success in this degree program. These letters, in addition to evaluating the standard aspects of the student’s qualifications to pursue a rigorous Ph.D. program of study, will also evaluate the student’s ability, intellectual curiosity, and passion for trans- and multidisciplinary approaches to problem solving.

　　A written personal statement describing the candidate’s interest in the program and career goals.

　　Students with a Master’s degree will follow the same admissions requirements as above. Credits not applied previously toward another degree may be transferred from another Virginia Tech program or outside institution, and applied toward the PhD degree, at the discretion of the Steering Committee (up to 6 credits). However, transferred credits may or may not replace the core programmatic coursework, based on the evaluation of the program curriculum committee.

　　International Students

　　For international students, a TOEFL score minima (90 minimum for internet based tests, with scores of 20 or greater in Listening, Writing, Speaking, and Reading subsections required, or a 550 minimum for paper-based tests) or IELT score minimum 6.5 (sent to institution code 5859). TOEFL scores are not required of U.S. permanent residents and U.S. naturalized citizens.
