About the course
The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Latin American Studies is a small and highly selective program designed to prepare students for a limited number of targeted careers that are best advanced by an interdisciplinary doctorate. Such students include individuals who seek employment in areas where the ability to research and teach across disciplines would be an advantage, and where having skills in two disciplines, combined with Latin American area expertise, would be more useful than extensive training within one discipline.
Students concentrating in Economics will learn how the embrace or rejection of neoclassical approaches has shaped economic development in Latin America, and how a broad understanding of economic theory can contribute to innovative solutions in the areas of poverty alleviation, health and education. The Economics concentration enables students to see beyond narrow interpretations of economic models, and to harness the power of economic ideas and techniques to understand the experience of Latin American countries and peoples.
