About the course

The Ethnomusicology program prepares students to evaluate and study the place of music in various cultural contexts. Students are trained in cultural theory, anthropology, ethnographic methods, problems in cross-cultural musical analysis, and world music and vernacular musical traditions. The University has particular strengths in Middle Eastern, Latin American and Caribbean, and South Asian studies. How to apply

Entry requirements for University of Chicago

Applications include electronic submission of the following materials:

  Personal statement (1 - 2 singe-spaced pages)

  Two writing samples (around 20 pages each)

  Unofficial transcripts from all colleges/universities attended

  Official GRE scores (institutional code 1832)

  Official TOEFL/IELTS scores if applicant is international or a non-native English speaker

  Three letters of recommendation

  Departmental Supplemental Form (accessible via the online application, no need to mail physical copy) Your writing samples indicate to the faculty your scope and ability for future research. Two samples (around 20 pages each) are requested. The GRE General Test is required of all applicants for admission. While we do not have a minimum GRE score requirement, admitted student scores are generally in the 75th percentile or higher. You may self-report your GRE general exam scores if necessary, provided that official GRE scores come directly from the test site. The TOEFL is required for all non-native/international applicants. As per University requirements, the minimum required score for the TOEFL is 104 overall, with 4 sub scores of 26 each. IELTS - Minimum required scores in the IELTS are an overall score of 7, with sub scores of 7 each. (Note: students are required to take the Academic Reading/Writing test within IELTS, not the General Training Reading/Writing test). The Division of the Humanities does not have minimum required GRE scores or GPA to be considered for admissions. Average GRE scores and GPA vary from department to department, so it is best to contact individual departments
