About the course

The Doctor of Philosophy degree is offered in Animal Science. Several areas of concentration are offered within the Animal Science Field of Study including: Animal Genetics and Genomics, Stem Cell and Regenerative Biology, Food Microbiology and Safety, Meat Science and Animal Physiology. The PhD degree requires demonstrated capabilities for conducting independent research plus related scholarly attributes. All graduate students receiving assistantship support are required to assist with the teaching of one (1) course per year of enrollment as part of their professional development.

  Each PhD plan of study must include thirty (30) credits of course work beyond the baccalaureate degree or its equivalent, or at least fifteen (15) credits beyond the master?s degree or other advanced degree in the same or a ly related field of study. All Ph.D. students must complete one credit of ANSC 5693 (Graduate Presentation Skills) and two credits of ANSC 5694 (Seminar). Students who have previously completed one credit of ANSC 5693 are exempt from that requirement. In addition to these course credit requirements, students must complete coursework necessary to satisfy the foreign language or related area requirements as prescribed by the Graduate School. In addition to this coursework, satisfactory completion of at least fifteen (15) credits of GRAD 6950 ? Doctoral Dissertation Research or Grad 6960 ? How to apply

Entry requirements for University of Connecticut

1. Your Personal Statement Of Interest (Refer below to Domestic or International Checklists listed under Graduate School Requirements)

  2. Three (3) Letters of Recommendation

  -Recommenders should upload their letters online.

  3. GRE scores (required). There is no set GRE minimum requirement, each candidate is evaluated individually by the ANSC Graduate Committee that has the authority to make admission recommendations to the Graduate School.

  4. Application must indicate preferred faculty advisor. Applicants should contact their preferred advisor before submitting their application to discuss whether the advisor currently is accepting graduate students.

  5. Applicants who apply to the Animal Science graduate program will need to choose an area of interest. The M.S. and Ph.D. programs offer the following areas of interest: Animal Genetics and Regenerative Biology, Growth and Reproductive Physiology, Animal Nutrition, and Food Microbiology and Safety. Applicants will have a chance to explain their preferred area of interest in their Personal Statement.

  Students whose native language is not English, regardless of visa status, must show evidence of proficiency in the English language by having earned either an Internet-based (IBT) TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score of at least 79 or a Paper-based (PBT) TOEFL score of at least 550, an overall band score of 6.5 or greater on the IELTS Academic Module (International English Language Testing System), or an overall score of 53 or greater on the PTE (Pearson Test of English) Academic test. Some departments require the Test of Spoken English (TSE) or the Test of Written English (TWE).

  A cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 for your entire undergraduate career or

  A grade-point average of at least 3.0 for your last two undergraduate years or

  Exceptional work in your entire final undergraduate year (3.5 or better)

  Graduate work with a minimum grade-point average of 3.0 or better even if the undergraduate grade-point average meets the above criteria.
