About the course

All students wishing to pursue a BS in music will be required to audition in their applied performance area. Students who do not perform at a level requisite for success in that degree program will be directed to work toward the Bachelor of Arts degree in music. Students may reaudition at any time for admittance to the BS program. Hofstra's proximity to New York City provides you with ready access to the heart of the world's music capital, its legendary music venues, the epicenter of the recording and publishing industries, streaming music providers, management companies, concert promoters, and music startups. Our music business faculty and alumni are intrinsically connected to the music industry assisting to provide internship and job placement for our students.

　　This concentration provides a musical environment that helps prepare students for a performing career in today?s diverse world of professional music. It builds knowledge of composition, arranging, improvisation, technology, history, and business. The program revolves around the core music curriculum centered on music theory, history, and expression. The jazz & contemporary music program of study specifically focuses on improvisation, jazz history, arranging, songwriting, and electronic music/studio courses. The program culminates in a final recital that presents a diverse sampling of many styles (ragtime, Dixieland, swing, bebop, hard bop, cool, modal, free, fusion, contemporary, neoclassical, Latin, etc.) as advised and mentored by their private instructor. We believe it is truly a diverse methodology, providing a well-rounded education for our students and a solid foundation for a career in the art of music.
