About the course

This major gives students an in-depth understanding of various scientific aspects of nutrition and food. Students study nutrient functions and requirements, metabolism, food quality and safety, the composition and chemical properties of foods, and changes in foods caused by processing, storage and preparation. Besides studying nutrition, food science, biology and microbiology, majors must take physics and complete extensive coursework in organic and analytical chemistry. The major has a strong science base that prepares students for job opportunities in the food industry, government agencies, careers in the medical field, and graduate study in the field. The undergraduate student is usually preparing for an advanced degree with specialization in Food Science or Nutrition and a career in university teaching and/or research, medicine, the food industry, or government. With proper advising, this program can also serve as a pre-medical curriculum.

The Nutrition and Food instrument laboratory provides a setting for chemical, analytical, and microbiology testing with new and updated equipment. The lab complex also features a new Cold Lab for research requiring constant low temperatures. Scholarships - View all scholarships Internships

How to apply

Entry requirements for Florida State University

All credentials from non-U.S. institutions must be evaluated by a foreign credential evaluation agency to include a U.S. equivalent grade point average. We recommend a member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services. All academic records must be issued in the native language and be accompanied by a certified English translation. All transcripts/academic records that are not in English must be accompanied by certified English translations. If the transcript/academic record does not indicate the degree earned and date the degree was awarded, separate proof of degree is required. We require freshman applicants to submit at least one ACT and/or SAT test score to be considered for admission. Florida State does not require the optional ACT writing score or the optional SAT essay. We encourage applicants to take both the ACT and SAT, and to attempt each exam more than one time to earn the highest possible score. Internet based TOEFL (IBTOEFL): 80, Paper based TOEFL (TOEFL): 550, International English Language Testing System (IELTS): 6.5.
