About the course

The Department of Music offers programs of study leading to the B.M. degree in music education (and state teaching certification in grades K-12), the B.M. degree with an emphasis in performance, the B.M. degree with an emphasis in theory/composition, the B.M. degree with elective studies in business, and the B.A. degree in music. Instruction in piano, organ, voice, and all band and orchestral instruments is given by full-time faculty and adjunct faculty who are also professional musicians. Some are members of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. Faculty recitals are regularly scheduled. A music degree builds the foundation for a career in professional performance, music education or composition and music theory. A music degree also prepares you for positions in the music industry (recording, publishing, radio programming, manufacturing, music retail) or as a church music director. Employers in many fields take notice of applicants with music degrees, music study requires a high level of discipline, musicians are creative and positive and musical aptitude is known to be correlated with other desirable skills.
