About the course
Housed within the College of Humanities and Social Science, the School of Integrative Studies (SIS) is a pioneer in integrative studies, which seeks to bring together research, theory and practice across numerous disciplines. The school offers the only integrative studies degree in Virginia, and one of the few in the country. Classes are designed so that you apply what you have learned to the world outside. You will enjoy small classes with ample room for discussion, collaborative learning, and experiential learning, including in community projects, volunteer opportunities, field work, internships and work with faculty on research that directly engages current social and global challenges. Faculty experts are committed to integrative teaching and research in areas such as the law, social justice and human rights, childhood studies and sustainability. Advisors and faculty mentor students to identify opportunities to challenge and extend the scope of their learning. You will be able to choose from a broad array of concentrations or design your own individualized course of study. Through partnerships with other academic departments, SIS offers accelerated degree programs and interdisciplinary minors. We encourage you to explore new topics and experiences while gaining the knowledge and skills you will need to enter the workforce. As you connect your learning with real-world challenges, you will gain competence and confidence as a leader prepared to enter the workforce and make a difference.
