About the course
Artists are visionary project managers who make new things happen in the world. The Fine Arts Major is a studio-based art program that professionally prepares you for a visually expressive, creative career. Fine Arts Major students develop their hand skills, expanding their imaginations while growing the abilities to conceptualize and create visually meaningful, expressive artwork. Decision making and leadership skills learned in taking your projects from concept to conclusion have applications in a wide variety of professional settings. Fine Arts program options combine hands-on Studio Art experiences with opportunities to develop your personal styles through independent and collaborative projects. Experimenting with art making techniques, generating a body of original artwork and participating in student exhibitions are key experiences in the Fine Arts Major. Courses start with introductory Art Foundations classes in Drawing, Painting, Ceramics and Printmaking. Students then select concentrations to further pursue one of these four areas. Studio electives offer the option to pursue another concentration or explore a variety of areas including Photography, Photoshop, and Graphic Design. The Art History courses here are personally engaging, supporting artistic development with hands-on art explorations, current connections and Detroit Institute of Arts trips.
