Bachelor of Arts in European and Mediterranean Studies

About the course

With the guidance of the European and Mediterranean studies adviser, students prepare a preliminary program outline at the time they declare their major. Although there are no formal tracks, courses are normally organized around the interests of a student in one of two ways:

an emphasis on European and Mediterranean societies (past and present)?their challenges and policies,

or an emphasis on European and Mediterranean cultures (past and present)?their ideas, values, and artistic and literary trends.

The program enables students to organize their courses around a practical or theoretical problem in contemporary or historical European society or culture that is applicable to one or several countries.

The Center for European and Mediterranean Studies (CEMS) offers an interdisciplinary major and minor in European and Mediterranean studies focusing on contemporary patterns of politics, culture, and society, as well as on historical developments in Europe and the European-Mediterranean region. Majors may choose to write a senior honors thesis, involving one-on-one research with CEMS faculty. Advanced knowledge of a European language and a semester of study in one of NYU?s European-based sites are required of all majors to help ensure acquirement of a deeper understanding of the culture and institutions of a country in the European or Mediterranean region. With the guidance of the European and Mediterranean studies adviser, students prepare a preliminary program outline at the time they declare their major.an emphasis on European and Mediterranean societies (past and present)?their challenges and policies,or an emphasis on European and Mediterranean cultures (past and present)?their ideas, values, and artistic and literary trends.
