About the course

The Department of Art and Design provides an excellent studio art program for its majors, minors and postgraduate students in recently built and renovated facilities utilizing state-of-the-art technology. While students are encouraged to develop their creative, intellectual and technical potential in the visual arts, they also have the opportunity to pursue minors in diverse areas such as anthropology, business, geography, history and more.

　　Emphasis is placed on the development of conceptual and visual vocabulary, as well as the ability of students to discuss their work within historical and contemporary contexts. At SIUE, students build upon a core foundation of skills in order to produce meaningful and engaging works with diverse objectives. Our students are challenged to view themselves as professionals on the first day they step into a classroom.

　　Sculpture alumni have gone on to pursue successful careers as professional artists, foundry personnel and educators in numerous colleges and universities throughout the country.

　　The sculpture studio is generously equipped. It features a Pillar solid-state induction melter that is capable of melting aluminum, bronze and iron. The welding area features stick-arc, oxy-acetylene, MIG, TIG and a plasma arc cutter. The fabrication area has two anvils, an 80# German-made air hammer and a power roller.

　　The mold-making and investment area has two sand mixers, a ceramic shell mixer as well as standard investment capabilities. These facilities are rounded out with three outside iron melters, a plaster room, wax working area (including a 40-quart wax melter) and a well-equipped woodworking shop (housing a wood lathe, bandsaws, drill press, scroll saw, table saw, panel saw, miter saw, etc.). In addition, a two-ton overhead-motorized bridge crane, as well as a motorized forklift, serve the entire foundry area. Scholarships - View all scholarships Internships
