About the course
Welcome to the University of North Carolina Wilmington's American Sign Language (ASL) Program. The University is committed to offering rigorous classes in languages, literatures, and cultures, and since 2008 we have been part of that effort. Since 2008, students have been able to use ASL to fulfill of their foreign language requirement. The faculty of the Department of World Languages and Cultures is committed to preparing students for participation in a global environment, be it business, teaching, government agencies, or graduate studies. More and more students pursue dual majors or minors in a foreign language and another area because knowing a foreign language is an advantage for future careers. Furthermore, while studying a foreign language helps students learn about other cultures and languages, it also strengthens linguistic and cultural competence in English. Finally, studying a foreign language enhances analytical and interpretive abilities. The department offers a wide spectrum of courses in literature, film studies, linguistics, phonetics, civilization, translation, conversation, and composition.
