Doctor of Philosophy in Biology

About the course

Students in the Biology Graduate Program are trained to become practicing professionals in a wide array of possible career paths, including academic positions, industry, government, or are prepared to take on additional schooling. The program achieves this through a combination of formal course work, research experience, and activities that foster the communication of scientific ideas. The specfic training depends on the degree program and we offer three, the Ph.D., the research or thesis Masters', and the non-thesis or coursework Master's. All students must complete a set of requirements outlined by the Graduate School at the University of Kentucky and the Biology Graduate Program.

The Ph.D. is the main graduate degree program in Biology. It provides the training necessary for a student to become an independent professional scholar in the life sciences with the skills to carry out their own original research and to educate others. Student growth is an emphasis of the program. Offers to enter the Ph.D. program are based on the applicant's potential as a scientist and educator. New students are expected to begin doing research immediately in their first year, under the guidance of an advisor. Coursework blends regular classes with seminars, and is typically performed during the first 4 semesters. A written and oral qualifying exam occurs sometime in years 2 or 3. Following a successful qualifying exam, research becomes the primary focus of a student's time. Once a significant body of original research has been achieved, a Ph.D. candidate writes a dissertation and defends it before a public audience and a committee of faculty members. How to apply

Entry requirements for University of Kentucky

Your application will include a variety of personal and contact information, your transcripts from undergraduate and any prior graduate education, your resume (or CV), and your test scores. Be sure to take the Graduate Record Examination (and Test of English as a Foreign Language, if applicable) several months before you intend to apply, so that your scores can be included with the application materials. Generally our admitted students have an undergraduate grade point average of at least 3.0 (out of 4.0), a combined verbal and quantitative Graduate Record Examination score of at least 1100 (old scoring system) or 300 (new scoring system), and for non-native English speakers a TOEFL score of at least 550 on paper based test or 213 on the computer-based test (CBT) or 79 on the internet-based test (iBT). Submission of scores on the verbal, quantitative and analytical writing portions of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) unless their chosen program indicates otherwise. The Graduate School has no minimum GRE score requirement, individual programs may set specific score requirements and in some cases may require the advanced portion of the GRE.

International applicants whose native language is not English must submit either a TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score. The University of Kentucky requires a minimum TOEFL score of 550 (paper-based), 213 (computer-based) or 79 (internet-based). For IELTS, a minimum mean band score of 6.5 is required. An overall grade point average of 2.75 on undergraduate work and 3.00 on all graduatework is required by the Graduate School. Individual departments may require higher gradepoint averages.
